About Me

Charuhasan is the father of Indian actress Suhasini Maniratnam, who is married to film director Maniratnam. He also acted for a short time in Sun TV's serial Chithi & Anandham. He is an avid amateur radio operator (callsign - VU2SCU). He lives in Chennai. He was born on 5 January to lawyer and Indian independence activist D. Srinivasan and his wife Rajalakshmi. He was the oldest son to the couple and more than twenty three years older than his youngest brother Kamal Haasan. He had a different schooling to other children his age; due to an accident he was unable to attend school for the first few years of his life and had a private tutor give him a basic education. He was directly admitted to fifth grade at the age of nine. In 1949, he joined the Raja Lakhamgouda Law College in Belgaum and qualified as a lawyer in 1951.

He practised law from 1951 to 1981. As lawyer, Charuhasan appeared in many high profile cases, even representing U. Muthuramalingam Thevar in the Immanuvel Sekaran murder case. During this period, he was influenced by the rationalist philosophy of Periyar E. V. Ramasamy. Periyar even referred to Charuhasan as his sishyan (disciple). He was basically an introvert and kept himself away from school functions and activities. He couldnt complete schooling from schools and he completed it with the help of a tutor. He was taken to fifth class after that. He was an average student too and cleared the exams with minimum marks. He has done both positive and negative roles in movies. He has handled both saint and ghost roles as well. He has worked as father, grandfather and uncle. A few of his noted Malayalam movies include; Ayushkaalam, Adharvam, Gandhari and Vachanam. A few of his Tamil movies include - Nenjathai Killathe, Moondru Mugam, Veera, Dil, Thalapathi and Jai hind. He worked with his son-in-law Maniratnam in the movie, Thalapathi. He has also directed two films, IPC 215 and Sangammam.
