Bhanupriya was born into a Telugu family. She has a younger sister Shantipriya who was also a film actress in 1990s. She began her acting career when she was just 17. Her first film was Mella Pesungal (1983) in Tamil. She made her Telugu debut with Sitaara, directed by veteran Vamsy. She has acted in over 80 Telugu films, about 40 Tamil films, 15 Hindi films, 12 Malayalam, and five Kannada films. She trained in classical dance; all her critically acclaimed movies were based on the subject, including Sitara and veteran K. Vishwanath's Swarnakamalam. She acted with Malayalam superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty in the movies Rajashilpi and Azhakiya Ravanan respectively. Her appearance and performances were well appreciated by her senior artistes and her co-stars in Tamil film industry from 1989 to 1993. Tamil Cinema's ace actor, Sivaji Ganesan had mentioned in one of his interviews that Bhanupriya is the only actress from the younger generation with matchable acting ability as Savithri and Padmini. She has acted in over 150 films as the female lead. She had also acted in a television serial, Shakthi, telecast on Sun Network channels. Her most famous ad was of Eyetex, popular eyeliner. Cinematographer and director P. C. Sreeram once described her as having the most beautiful and photogenic face among south Indian movie actresses. Bhanupriya fell in love with Adarsh Kaushal, a Hyderabadi settled in the United States as a digital graphics’ engineer. Subsequently, the couple got married at the Sri Venkateswara temple in Malibu, California on 14 June 1998. The couple has a daughter Abhinaya born in 2003. Bhanupriya divorced Kaushal in 2005 and returned to India, where she resumed her acting career. Bhanupriya now lives in Chennai with her daughter Abhinaya. Her upcoming movie is Sivangi.
