Girija is the elder sister of another choreographer Kala. Gayathri got married to Deepak Chandrasekhar who is a software engineer working in United States of America in 2006.  Later the couple filed for divorce in 2009. Her elder sister Suja is also a prominent dancer and actress. Gayathri started acting at 14. Her debut was Charlie Chaplin with Prabhu Deva in 2002, which was followed by a film each in Kannada film Manasella Neene, Tamil movie Style and Malayalam Nakshathrakkannulla Rajakumaran Avanundoru Rajakumari. In 2003 she was seen in four unremarkable films and subsequently she quit films to relocate to the USA after failing to make a breakthrough as an actress. She returned in 2008 as a choreographer with films like Jayam Kondaan and Poi Solla Porom and has since worked in big budget productions including Kanthaswamy, Aadhavan, Ko and Vaanam. Her work in the satire Tamil Padam was well received. By 2014, she had choreographed around 100 films. She joined the BJP party on 2014.
