Shruthi Haasan is a daughter of notable actor Kamal Haasan and Sarika. She has a younger sister Akshara. Until her 10th grade, she studied at the Lady Andal in Chennai and moved to Mumbai to pursue psychology at St Andrew’s College. However, Haasan shifted her focus to cinema and music, and before returning to Chennai, she travelled to the USA to continue to learn music at the Musicians Institute in California. At age 6, she started singing in her father's Thevar Magan composed by Ilaiyaraaja. At the time of schooling, she made her singing debut in the Hindi language film, Chachi 420, next in Hey Ram film, both in Tamil and Hindi and her career goes on. After much speculation, Shruti Haasan was finalized as the music composer of the Tamil film Unnaipol Oruvan, which was released in 2009.

Haasan's first appearance in a feature film was a cameo role as the daughter of Vallabhbhai Patel in the Tamil-Hindi bilingual Hey Ram, directed by Kamal Haasan. After rejecting prominent film offers, most notably the lead role in Venkat Prabhu's Saroja, reports suggested in late 2007 that Haasan was set to make her full debut as a heroine in 2008 with a movie opposite Madhavan directed by Nishikanth Kamath.  In July 2008, she signed up to feature in Soham Shah's Hindi film Luck opposite Imran Khan. Her blockbuster films are Yevadu, Race Gurram, Balupu, Gabbar Singh, 7aum Arivu, 3 and so on. She diversified her roles as Actress, singer, model, dancer, and musician. Shruti Haasan signed as a brand ambassador for Lloyd, an electrical appliances company. She also endorses Emami Navratna cool talc.
