Dutta was born into a conservative Bengali Hindu family. She attended D.B.M.S. English School in her hometown, and attended Junior College in Pune. She dropped out of college after completing her first year of BCom to pursue a modelling career. Her sister, Ishita Dutta, is also an actress and model. In 2003, Dutta won the Femina Miss India Pageant held in Mumbai. She became one of the top 10 finalists at the Miss Universe 2004 contest which took place in Quito, Ecuado. She he represented India amongst 133 other countries. Dutta was offered prestigious modelling assignments from recognized Indian designers and national brands. This victory allowed for her successful entry in the Bollywood industry. She made her Bollywood début in 2005, appearing in Chocolate and Aashiq Banaya Apne. She did an Indian pop music video, "Saiyan Dil Mein Aana Re" by Harry Anand before taking part in the Miss India pageant, it was a massive hit. She also acted in the films include Veerabhadra, Chocolate: Deep Dark Secrets, Risk, Good Boy, Bad Boy, Speed, Saas Bahu Aur Sensex, Ramaa: The Saviour and Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai.
