Gana Bala is a playback singer and lyricist in the Tamil film industry. His real name is Bala Murugan, but known by his stage name, Gana bala. He is also known by the names - Anathai Bala and ‘Gana Kuyil King' Bala. 'Aadi Pona Aavani' and 'Nadukadalula Kappala' from the soundtrack of Attakathi made him a popular singer of Kollywood. He sings songs belonging to the gaana genre of Tamil Nadu and has been credited for reviving this type of singing in Tamil cinema.
Bala was born on 20 June 1970. Bala first tripped on ‘Gaana’ when he was in high school. He later did his graduation from Presidency College, Chennai in Botany subject. He won reality show Gana Kuyil Pattu aired on Kalaignar TV and following it, he sang for numerous devotional albums. He has also given many stage performances as a gaana singer. He made his debut in the film industry with Piragu composed by Srikanth Deva. 'Aadi Pona Aavani' and 'Nadukadalula' in the sleeper hit Attakathi made him a popular gaana singer of Tamil nadu.
A few of the songs in which Bala was featured include - Vedha, Udhayam NH4, Raja Rani and Vaaraayo Vennilaave. Most recently he won best playback singer for the song, Nadukadalula Kappala at Vikatan Awards 2012. Bala holds a degree in law and practises as a lawyer too. He has contested local municipal elections twice as an independent candidate, but lost both times.
