P. C. Sreeram is an ace cinematographer of Tamil film industry widely regarded as "Guru of Cinematography". He has also directed a few movies of which Kuruthipunal, starring Kamal Haasan, Arjun and Gouthami in lead roles, was India’s official entry for the 68th Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film category. His association with acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam has delivered classic hits like Mouna Ragam, Nayagan, Agni Natchathiram and Geetanjali in the late 1980’s. Thiruda Thiruda and Alaipayuthey are his other noted associations with Mani Ratnam later. He has worked in all south Indian languages apart from Bollywood. His niece, Preetha Jayaraman, is now an established cinematographer in the Tamil Film industry. He was born in Chennai in 1956. He was not interested in school days since childhood and developed an interest in photography in those days. He studied Cinematography from Madras Film Institute before entering movies. He entered film world in the 1980’s. Meendum Oru Kaathal Kathai was his earliest appreciated work. Yet he struggled in the industry for some time till he got opportunity to work with ace film maker Mani Ratnam. Their association started with mega blockbuster Mouna Ragam in 1986. The movie was a breakthrough to both its director as well as cinematographer. The successful team once again teamed up for the path breaking movie – Nayakan, which is listed among the top 100 Indian movies all time. Sreeram received national award for best cinematography for this movie. Sreeram experimented with his techniques for his next movies with Mani Ratnam - Agni Natchathiram and Geetanjali. He received Nandi awards for the cinematography of Geetanjali. Other noted works of Sreeram are Thiruda Thiruda, Gopura Vasalile and Thevar Magam. Sreeram made his directional debut in 1992, with the film Meera.
